RAAHEN LAULUTOVERIT, A MIXED CHOIR

General
information

Raahen Laulutoverit, a mixed choir, was founded in autumn 1975. Its purpose was to foster and promote workers' music in Raahe, a steel-manufacturing town situated on the gulf of Bothnia. Since its foundation the choir has performed actively.

Achievements

A notable achievement of the choir was the grand prize at the Kotka International Seamen's Song Festival in 1981. The winning repertoire included a story about the seamen of Raahe at the time when it was the largest shipping town in Finland.

During 1982 Raahen Laulutoverit and TV2 made a film, "Aaltoin päällä" (Over the Waves), which is based on the seamen's song repertoire.

The choir has since made many recordings for Finnish radio.

In the autumn of 1993 Laulutoverit in co-operation with Estonian TV made a video in Tallinn (the capital of Estonia), which was chosen as the best program of the week.

Leaders
of the choir

The leader of the choir from its foundation in 1975 through to the summer of 1992 was Pauli Ylitalo. Sirje Rätsep succeeded Pauli and led the choir up until the autumn of 1997 when Tapani Säily took over the leadership. Tapani Säily led the choir up the spring 2010.
